I thought I would post a follow up shot of the guitar I did with the "back lit" tortiose bindings.
this one is an african mahogany/red spruce 12 fret dred.

Hey nice to see you back. Is the "Back Light" plastic, fiber or paint? I assume plastic?

Man oh man ... That is a beaut my friend.

I got mahogany body that is planned for a some tortise bindings, maybe I should "light-em up."

Without the snow on the Cape you are very productive.

Nice work

Nice look, Matt! Is that just regular white fiber behind the tortoise? I'll have to do a trial myself and see the color transmission difference. I would imagine the thickness of the binding has an effect as well. Where do you buy tortoise binding? I got some from Martin awhile ago but haven't tried it yet.

I actually love the tortoise look but have been reluctant to use it on darker wood because it didn't seem to contrast as well as I liked. You've come up with a great approach. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Matt,
looking good. The binding really has a classy look. That lacquer job isn't
too shabby either. But anybody that has a shop as nice as yours has a
huge advantage over the rest of us! ''

Looks great, Matt! Really brightens up the tortoise against the mahogany. Did you do the same on the fb binding? Would like pics!

Since a previous discussion on OLF regarding "backlighting", I discovered that Martin did the same on at least some of their 21 trim models, bringing out the tortoise against the darker rosewood. Several D-21s I've seen don't have it, but older 000 models do.

Maybe they felt that mahogany is light enough that it wasn't needed on those models, but yours looks great. Although I don't see any sign of it on their current tortoise-bound OM-21 on their web site, it could be there.

Thanks everyone, first I want to be clear that I did see this done first on Martin guitars and liked it so much I decided to try it.

I was`nt sure that you folks would like them. I have been on the fence myself, i was affraid it would look to fancy, or fruity. if I had some darker tortoise I may have chosen that instead.

The "back lite" is indeed white plastic joined to the tortiose with acetone.

here is the front of the guitar, the pic is kind of dark but if you look close you can see that I bound the f-board with the tortoise white and white line too.

thanks again for looking y`all

I really like that Matt. Very creative and very well executed. I did not get that promised picture of the front and would definitely like to see that as well.

What is the finish?

Really classy looking to my eye. I used a tortoise binding on my first guitar and was disappointned that the contrasting colors were almost invisible. This solves that problem nicely, along with some great workmanship.

Was it BobC making all that binding and purfling? Hey Bob, how about doing up some white backed tortoise binding for us?
